Edited by Laurie Brinklow, Frank Ledwell, and Jane Ledwell

Islands as refuge; islands as prison. Islands as paradise; islands as hell. From Robinson Crusoe’s island to The Island of the Colorblind, in works by writers from Shakespeare to Alistair MacLeod, islands continue to serve as powerful symbols and metaphors in world literature.
In June 1998, Prince Edward Island hosted the first-ever international conference and literary festival focusing on the literature of small islands. Fifty scholars from islands such as Tasmania, New Zealand, Iceland, the Isle of Man, Pender Island, the Magdalen Islands and Prince Edward Island along with island-loving “mainlanders” from Canada and the US presented papers about island literature from around the world.
